Surgical Root Pruning
We expose the offending root and make a clean cut. The wound is treated to prevent disease entry, and the remaining root system supports the tree.
Stop aggressive roots from cracking your foundation, driveway, or plumbing. We surgically prune problematic roots and install physical barriers—saving your home without sacrificing your tree.
In Austin's expansive clay soil, tree roots aggressively seek moisture. They can extend 2-3 times the width of the canopy, often tunneling under slab foundations or lifting concrete driveways. The old method was to rip them out with a backhoe, often killing the tree.
Our approach is different. We use Air-Spade technology to expose roots with compressed air, allowing us to make clean, surgical cuts that heal quickly, preventing rot from traveling back to the trunk.
We calculate the CRZ before cutting. Cutting too close to the trunk destroys stability. We find the safe distance to install barriers that redirect future growth downward.
Early detection can save you tens of thousands in structural repairs. Look for these signs of root encroachment.
Diagonal cracks above doors or windows often indicate a foundation shifting due to soil desiccation by roots.
Sidewalk or driveway panels raised unevenly are a classic sign of surface root pressure.
Roots invade sewer lines through tiny cracks seeking water, eventually causing total blockage.
Large shade trees planted within 10-15ft of a slab foundation are prime candidates for future conflict.
We expose the offending root and make a clean cut. The wound is treated to prevent disease entry, and the remaining root system supports the tree.
We install BioBarrier® fabric or high-density panels in a trench. This physically stops roots and chemically redirects them away from your home.
Using supersonic air, we blow away soil to reveal the root structure without the damaging scrapes of shovels or backhoes.
We mark utilities and identify the optimal trench line outside the Critical Root Zone.
Using the Air-Spade or trenchers, we excavate a narrow channel to reveal conflicting roots.
We prune roots and insert the barrier vertically (18-24" deep) to block regrowth.
We backfill the trench with native soil, ensuring the barrier is hidden just below grade.
Protecting your home is an investment. Here are typical ranges.
Per side of tree. Includes air-spade exposure and clean cuts.
Per linear foot. Includes trenching, barrier material, and backfill.
For exploratory digging or decompaction work. Crew included.
*Final quote depends on soil hardness (rock vs clay) and access.
If done incorrectly, yes. However, we calculate the 'Critical Root Zone' based on the tree's diameter and prune selectively. We never remove more than 25% of the root mass, ensuring stability and health.
A root barrier is a physical shield (usually high-density plastic or bio-chemical fabric) installed vertically in a trench. It forces roots to dive downward rather than spreading laterally towards your foundation or driveway.
Typically, we install barriers 18 to 24 inches deep. Most destructive tree roots are found in the top 12 inches of soil, so this depth effectively blocks their path.
